WEDNESDAY WOMEN

We caught up with Jasmine Rose, to talk about sustainability, veganism and creating change.

How did you become a voice for change through veganism?

It was journey to get here. I started to change my lifestyle about 5 years ago. It started as a bit of a challenge: I decided not to eat meat & animal biproducts during lent. It was really, really hard at first and initially I had many cravings. I especially missed cheese & dairy.

To take my mind of the cravings and to motivate myself, I started watching documentaries on veganism, and it gave me a whole new perspective on food and what happens before it ends up on our plate. I think many more people would give up meat if they saw what happens to animals as they are slaughtered.

It changed my mindset and made it easier to give up the things I missed.

How has your upbringing influenced your choices as an adult?

My upbringing has definitely had a role to play. Several members of my family have had various health problems, and I personally had some health issues in 2012 when I was prescribed lifelong medication. The prospect of being on medicine for the rest of my life really scared me.

So, I decided to approach my healing from a more holistic point of view. I sought advice and was encouraged to cut out certain foods from my diet.

My health problems went away, and I discovered that the various health challenges my family was battling were caused largely by their diet.

I didn’t want to follow that path of unhealthy eating and decided to educate myself on how to live a healthier life.

I discovered that food can be your medicine or your poison – depending on what you choose to eat.

What message do you wish to convey to your community?

I have been quite active on social media since 2010 and have always been willing to share my personal experiences, so it was a natural development to share my journey towards veganism with my community.

I felt I could help others make changes to their lives and be a positive influence. I want to show that there are alternatives out there and people are receptive. I’m happy to be this positive voice and pave the way for others.

Are you familiar with THE GLOBAL GOALS?

I haven’t come across them before, but will absolutely check them out.

What are the changes you would most like to see in the next 5 years?

I would like to see an end to products being tested on animals… I’m a big advocate for stopping animal cruelty.

We also need to have no more plastic in the ocean. It is wreaking havoc on our health and on the eco system.

What are the highlights of your career so far?

I’m happy that I can inspire others to make changes to their lives. If I can just influence one person, I feel I have made a difference and that’s incredibly rewarding.
