The WLD Summer Movie Club

How are you dealing with the heat waves around the world? If you have AC in your home, sometimes chilling out and just watching a great summer flick is the best answer for a night in (also can I come over? I’m melting…)

Are you in need of some movie recommendations? Here’s 5 films you may not have seen, and are some personal favourites I’ve discovered this past year.

1. Tully

Written by Diablo Cody (writer of Juno), Tully is the name of a night nanny sent to help struggling mom Margo (Charlize Theron) with her newborn baby. Margo feels trapped at home with her three kids and unhelpful husband, and forms a friendship with the young, cheerful Tully (played by Mackenzie Davis). The women compare stories, grow closer, and help Margo confront her inner problems head-on. The film is an unflinching and sometimes stomach-turning look at the realities of motherhood, and the plot goes in directions you didn’t quite expect. It’s still a gorgeous movie with fantastic performances by the two lead actresses.

2. Princess Cyd

A lesser-known indie film from 2017, Princess Cyd is a relaxing, dreamy slice-of-life movie about growing up, discovery and relationships between women. Cyd (Jessie Pinnick) is a 16-year-old teen who goes to spend a summer in Chicago with her aunt Miranda (Rebecca Spence), a famous author and sister of Cyd’s deceased mother. Cyd and Miranda haven’t seen each other since Cyd was a baby, and at first glance it seems like they have nothing in common, but they soon grow closer and bond over their losses. This film was one of my favourites from last year, and is available on Netflix!

3. Annihilation

If you’re a sci-fi nerd like me, this movie will take you for a trip. After her husband (Oscar Isaac) returns comatose and dying from a quarantined forest filled with extraterrestrial life, biologist Lena (Natalie Portman) and a team of female military scientists adventure into the area to find answers and a cure. Annihilation is a film unlike you’ve ever seen before. Mind-bending visuals and shocking scenes may scare you, but it’s a movie that will stay with you for days after seeing it. Careful, this film is a bit scarier than most!

4. Girls Trip

This breakout comedy was one of the funniest films of 2017. Four friends from college (played by Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish and Jada Pinkett Smith) reunite for a trip to New Orleans that they’ll never forget as they confront their issues with romance and each other. Girls Trip is hilarious, delightfully raunchy, and features a star-making turn for Tiffany Haddish who steals every scene she’s in. If you’re needing something fun to make you scream with laughter, this movie’s for you.

5. Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Yes, these movies are corny, but that’s what makes them so amazing. A sequel from the 2008 musical hit, the movie follows a pregnant Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) reconnecting with her mother’s (Meryl Streep) past in Greece. The star-studded cast also has Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Lily James, Pierce Brosnan, Andy Garcia, and CHER, all singing songs from ABBA. Is there anything more you’d really want?

Happy viewing! Let us know which ones you like!
