Our Favourite Movies of 2018

With 2018 drawing to a close, that means it’s time for my favourite thing every December: year-end lists! Throughout the next few weeks we’ll be recapping our favourite things from this crazy year, whether it be music, movies, jewelry or otherwise! Let’s get started with some films that made a big impact on the team at With Love Darling!

Bohemian Rhapsody

An exciting and emotional look into the legendary band Queen, especially the iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury. Rami Malek’s transformative performance is incredible to watch, and learning how a band like Queen can come together is fun for any music lover.

Eighth Grade

Who wasn’t awkward in their eighth grade? Comedian Bo Burnam’s impressive debut film follows socially awkward Kayla (Elsie Fisher), who’s on the cusp of leaving middle school and has dreams of being a successful Youtuber and social butterfly. The humour of Eighth Grade can be extremely cringe-worthy at times, but Fisher carries the heart of the movie and makes you care deeply about Kayla’s trials and tribulations.

A Star Is Born

I’ll admit, we were a bit split on this movie at the With Love Darling headquarters. Some of us loved it, others weren’t a fan. Lady Gaga’s film debut has launched the pop star into movie star status, focusing on a young singer falling in love with grizzled rockstar Jackson (Bradley Cooper) as fame threatens to tear them apart. Great music and emotional acting, A Star Is Born manages to defy expectations in every way possible.

Widows

Widows is the story of four women who’s husbands die while attempting to pull off a haywire bank heist. Left with no support and a debt owned to a crime boss, the women must band together to pull off a different sort of heist to save themselves from their husband’s mistakes. What’s great about Widows is that it's never what you expect. There’s more than meets the eye to each character, with Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki and Liam Neeson bringing strong performances with a tight script.

What were your favourite movies? Let us know, and stay tuned for more lists!
